Mark Orton

At the age of 5, I started my waterfowl career while sitting with my father on the cold marsh days at Union Slough. I knew that this love of waterfowl was in my blood forever. Slowing down was definitely not an option! I later started enhancing my hunting career through with the use of proper decoys, blinds, and great calls. It absolutely thrilled me to be able to land ducks and geese directly in the spread, in either a water or field set.

As years passed, I progressively gained skills as a goose caller. In 2005, I was able to win the Cabelas Classic single and double goose calling contest with life long friend Tony Toye in Prairie Deuchine, Wisconsin. In 2007, Toye and I placed third in the state of Wisconsin. Since then I have backed off on the calling circuit, focusing more on realistic sounds of geese with the intent of wanting to imitate the exact honker sounds. I value the role of calling, but take greater pride in my ability of knowing how to read geese. It’s very important to know when to give a cluck, a moan, or a feeder growl and sometimes I feel that hunters don’t read the guess as well as is necessary.

I currently own a landscaping business in Ventura Iowa. This profession allows me to take time off in the spring and fall for hunting. I enjoy filming turkey hunts in the spring and bow hunting whitetails when I’m not waterfowling. I freelance guide in the fall and work for Tony Toye full-time for the spring snow goose season. This will be my fifth season with Toye and I can honestly say he is an incredible outfitter to work for. Toye is very passionate and knowledgeable about his career along with all of his guides. Because of these qualities, I continue to work with Toye and the Saunders Team. Last spring, I had the opportunity for the first time to hunt with Bill during snow goose season. I could see he had the same passion and knowledge as the Big River guides. His carhart-wearing, monotone demeanor says it all. He’s not out for show, he’s here to hunt. Bill”s entire crew of guys are just as passionate and are successful hunters, as well. These are the guys I want to surround myself with and that is why I chose the Saunders’ crew. Bill’s calls are exceptional and I would recommend them to anyone who wants a true, realistic sound of a duck or goose. I am honored to be on the team and look forward to some good things happening in the future.
